As Nigerians continue to react to the abysmal performance and unprecedented high cost of living to mark the first anniversary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, the nation reflects on the little project achievements of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Despite economic challenges, a noteworthy figure has emerged as a critical pillar within the federal cabinet: Barrister Nyesom Wike, the Minister for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
Wike, a prominent member of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and former Governor of Rivers State, has played a significant role in sustaining the APC-led administration’s functionality and credibility. His appointment was a strategic move by President Tinubu to bridge political divides, weaken the main opposition party and also leverage Wike’s extensive administrative experience.
As Minister of the FCT, Wike has demonstrated remarkable leadership, bringing his proven track record of performance that earned him “Mr Project”, to the nation’s capital. His proactive approach to urban development in Abuja has provided a semblance of progress amidst widespread dissatisfaction. Wike’s initiatives in the FCT have been some of the few visible and tangible accomplishments that the administration can point to, reflecting his capacity to drive development even in challenging economic conditions.
While the APC-led administration faces criticism for its slow pace of development and controversial economic policies, Barrister Wike’s presence in the federal cabinet has been a beacon of hope. His ability to navigate political divides and drive progress is a testament to his commitment to public service and his ability to work across party lines. For over a week now, it has been from one project commissioning to the other at the FCT; I wonder if his colleagues from the APC will not be very envious of this PDP product.Â
As Nigeria moves forward, it is essential to recognize and appreciate the contributions of individuals like Barrister Nyesom Wike, who have played a crucial role in shaping the government’s agenda and driving progress on key initiatives. At every commissioning, he kept referring to the “Renewed Hope Agenda” of President Tinubu. Despite the challenges, Wike’s influence has helped sustain the administration’s functionality and credibility, providing a foundation for future growth and development.
While APC had proven to be the best at opposition politicking, now that they are in government, they need the acumen and sagacity of a thorough breed PDP man to navigate the complexities of governance in Nigeria. Anyway, Barrister Wike of PDP is on loan to the APC and would do everything possible to rescue them from imminent relegation but when it eventually happens, his mother club will hold a grand reception for him.
